How does Self-Consumption Plus work?

Self-Consumption Plus controls your home battery and connected devices as one smart energy system. Every day, we create a plan to use as much of your own solar energy as possible and reduce the amount of electricity you need from the grid.

What does Frank consider?

We create a new plan for your household every day. To do this, we look at:

• how much electricity we expect you to use;
• how much solar energy we expect you to generate;
• how your connected devices normally use energy;
• the local weather forecast; and
• electricity prices and opportunities in the energy markets.

This allows us to plan when it is best to use, store or sell your energy.

How do your devices work together?

We no longer optimise each connected device separately. Instead, your home battery and other connected devices work together based on one plan for your household.

For example, if we expect a lot of solar energy later in the day, we can take this into account when controlling your battery. This can leave more room in the battery to store your own solar energy when it becomes available.

Is Self-Consumption Plus only about using your own energy?

No. Using your own solar energy is an important part of Self-Consumption Plus, but we also look at the energy markets. This means we can adjust the plan when buying, storing or selling electricity at another time can provide extra financial value.

The aim is to find the best combination: use as much of your own energy as possible, reduce your use of the grid and take advantage of the energy markets when this is beneficial.

Why can the battery behave differently from day to day?

The best plan depends on your household and the conditions that day. Your expected consumption, solar production, weather and electricity prices can all change.

That is why your battery does not always simply charge when prices are low and discharge when prices are high. We look at the complete energy picture of your household and adjust the plan accordingly.
